Building strength and muscle: start with a plan you can repeat
You don’t need a complicated workout routine to get started. You need exercises that fit your ability, a manageable schedule, and a clear way to progress.
Research supports a reassuring message: there is more than one effective way to train.
What the research tells us
A 2023 systematic review compared resistance-training programs in healthy adults. Across the approaches studied, resistance training improved strength and muscle growth compared with no exercise. Heavier loads generally favored strength gains, while programs using multiple sets ranked highly for muscle growth. Currier and colleagues, British Journal of Sports Medicine.
That gives us flexibility when building a program. Your goals matter, but so do your experience, available equipment, and the amount of training you can realistically sustain.
These findings describe averages across studies—not a single ideal routine for every person.
What this looks like in practice
At Peak Science Fit, the starting point is you. We choose movements you can perform with control and build a routine around your life.
A practical approach is to:
- Keep a simple training record. Note the exercise, weight, repetitions, and how challenging the set felt.
- Practice consistent technique. Progress is easier to judge when you perform the movement in a similar way each session.
- Make small adjustments. As an exercise becomes more manageable, we can increase the repetitions or resistance.
- Review the whole picture. Your schedule, recovery, and confidence help guide the next step.
Progress doesn’t need to happen every workout
For example, we might choose a range of 8–12 repetitions for an exercise. You begin with a weight you can control. Over time, you work toward the top of that range. When you can complete the planned sets with consistent technique and the intended effort, we consider a small increase in weight.
This is an example of a coaching approach, not a rule that every exercise or client must follow. Some sessions are about practicing a movement or maintaining your routine through a busy week.
